Teaching styles play a crucial role in teaching language skills. Teaching Reading Comprehension and Essay Writing are not exceptional. The educational system is based on three main correlated pillars, namely the instructor, the students, and the subject/teaching material. Focusing on one pillar on the account of the other two may destabilize the educational system. As such, do instructors’ teaching styles correlate with students’ achievement? On this basis, the current research aims at investigating the correlation between the teaching styles (TSs) of instructors of English as a foreign language (EFL) and male and female students' academic achievement in the subjects of Reading Comprehension and Essay Writing at university level. It hypothesizes that there is no correlation between teachers’ teaching styles and students’ academic achievement. The selected sample comprised 6 instructors and 1339 second and third-years students of the Departments of English language at the College of Education and College of Basic Education / University of Mosul. Concerning students' academic achievement, the researchers considered the scores of the term exam in the researched teaching subjects for the sample of students of the College of Education and the scores of the semester final exam for the sample of students of the College of Basic Education. Staffordshire Evaluation of Teaching Styles Questionnaire was used as a tool to identify instructors' teaching styles. The results demonstrated that the level of correlation between instructors’ teaching styles and students’ academic achievement range from moderate to very strong, i.e. the correlation is positive. Moreover, the level of correlation between instructors’ teaching styles and students’ academic achievement in Reading Comprehension is 0.8118 compared to 0.8178 in Essay Writing. As a general conclusion, it has been noticed that all the researched teaching styles have a positive impact on students’ achievement in general, and in RC and EW in particular. Finally, some suggestions for future research have been forwarded .

Issue 17-part two

Teaching is the process of transmitting information from one party to another. In the process of teaching, the teacher has to be knowledgeable to make class environment suitable for learners to learn the provided topic. Teaching process concentrates on three major components: teacher, students and subject matter. Teacher is usually the main figure in the class. He prepares the material to his students and present it to them in the class. He also supplies them with feedback. In doing so, he uses different procedures. Those procedures have different terms that define them. Implementing various procedures require setting objects, planning, selecting material, distributing the roles in the class, and so on. This research aims at clarifying the areas of overlap between these terms and which are quite confusing for English language teachers and students and in such a way that will enable them to use the researched terms in their correct form and context. The researchers have reviewed some researches have the overlap in the meaning of some English language teaching- specific terms, namely- theory, approach, method, strategy, style, tactic, technique. It is noteworthy that a teaching theory attends to the process of defining and explaining teaching process; a teaching approach: the process of making assumptions about teaching process; a teaching method: planning classroom procedures; a teaching strategy: with fulfilling teaching objectives; a teaching style: finding out the best way to impart information; a teaching tactic: fulfilling short-term objectives and a teaching: implementing teaching methods while teaching. in the class. To bring about the research aims, the two researchers have set a criterion of three items viz goal, focus and hierarchy to estimate and find out the degree and extent of overlapping in the meanings of the terms already referred to by referring to the previous studies on the overlap between them. On analyzing the relevant data. It has been found out that overlap does exist between the meanings of these terms. Hence, some conclusions and recommendations have been forwarded.

Issue 3

Volume 17

The main aim of this research is to investigate which strategy (Picture Strip Story Strategy or Video Strategy) has more effect on learners’ listening comprehension proficiency. The main problems that face EFL learners with regard to listening comprehension relate to the strategies that have been used for listening and the purpose of listening process. Thus, three null-hypotheses are set to investigate the use of picture strip story strategy and video strategy in teaching listening comprehension and their effect on learners' listening comprehension proficiency. A quantitative research design is adopted. The sample (randomly selected) has consisted of (50) participants. They have been divided equally into two groups. The participants study at Department of English, Basic Education College in Mosul University. The content taught which is consisted of (8) videos is chosen from the documentaries of BBC channel. The length of each one is around (5-7) minutes. The same material is edited to suit the group whom taught by using picture strip story strategy. In addition, MCQ test is used for data-collecting. Then, t-test statistic tool is used for analyzing the collected data. Finally, the results reveal that both strategies are useful for teaching listening comprehension. Group (B) who taught by using video strategy has scored (16.4800) which is more than group (A) who taught using picture strip story strategy whom has scored(13.2800).

Issue 2

Volume 17

Listening comprehension is a cognitive approach to deal with spoken texts. However, listening to foreign language causes anxiety to the learners of that language. Two null-hypotheses have been employed to investigate the relation of anxiety to learners' listening comprehension proficiency using visual strategies, namely, picture strip story strategy and video strategy. To find out the relation between learners' anxiety and their listening comprehension proficiency by using picture strip story strategy and video strategy, the researcher has used a questionnaire which is consisted of (20) items. The questionnaire is likert-type scale . A quantitative method research design is adopted. The sample consists of (50) participants whom are randomly selected and split equally into two groups. The subjects study at Department of English /Basic Education College / Mosul University. Each group is taught by using one strategy (group A is taught by using picture strip story strategy (PSSS) and group B is taught via using video strategy). Pearson Correlation Formula is used for data-analysis. The results are as follows: There is a positive relation between learners' listening anxiety and their listening comprehension proficiency of the group whom taught by using picture strip story strategy. There is a positive relation between learners' listening anxiety and their listening comprehension proficiency of the group whom taught by using video strategy.
