PKS-Derived Porous Carbon/Epoxy Composites for EMI Shielding

Porous carbon was synthesized from palm kernel shell (PKS) via hydrothermal treatment at 160 °C, 180 °C, and 200 °C, followed by carbonization, and characterized to evaluate its structural, chemical, and electromagnetic properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed broad (002) and (100) peaks, indicating amorphous graphitic carbon with limited crystallinity. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed O–H, C–H, and C=C functional groups, with the 180 °C sample showing enhanced C–H intensity, suggesting optimal preservation of aliphatic structures. BET analysis indicated that the 180 °C sample had the highest surface area (547.4 m²/g), and SEM images revealed a fragmented, open morphology conducive to porosity. Epoxy composites filled with this sample demonstrated improved electromagnetic attenuation at X-band frequencies, as evidenced by reduced transmission coefficients with increasing filler content, attributed to enhanced dielectric losses and interfacial polarization. These results highlight the importance of hydrothermal synthesis temperature in tailoring the structure and electromagnetic performance of biomass-derived porous carbon.
