A Speech Act Analysis of Trump's Second Inaugural Speech

The study mainly focuses on analysing speech acts as they manifest in President Donald Trump's second inaugural address. The aim is to investigate the various speech acts, with particular emphasis on illocutionary speech acts performed by President Donald Trump. A qualitative method is employed, utilising a descriptive analysis design. The data for this study were collected by downloading the video of the inaugural speech from YouTube. Subsequently, the data were transcribed into written form and classified according to the types of illocutionary speech acts. The findings indicate that President Trump utilised five distinct types of illocutionary speech acts throughout his speech, with representative speech acts being the most frequently used.This study may prove advantageous for researchers interested in the interplay of language and political discourse, and it could also be of value to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, as it seeks to elucidate the various types of speech acts.

A Qualitative Analysis of Convergence and Divergence in Mosuli Social Groups on Facebook

Facebook is one of the top social networking sites these days. The number of Facebook users is nearly two billion people around the world. They surf Facebook daily and spend countless hours online communicating with people. While communicating, most people try to modify their way of writing and commenting in accordance with the different sorts of people whom they are interacting with. Sometimes, users increase or decrease the social distance during interactions. The current study intends to investigate the adjustments and strategies that Facebook users make and follow while commenting in Mosuli social groups. The model adopted and by which data are analyzed is the Communication accommodation theory. The data are a corpus of (17899) words. The results of the study show that there are numerous purposes for converging and diverging. Moreover, divergence is very probable to happen since anonymity gives commenters freedom to express their ideas and to be offensive sometimes thanks to the absence of nonverbal feedback and unrevealing usernames.

Billions of people use social networking sites, and they are an inseparable part of their daily lives. Along with the development of technology, new communication behaviours have been acquired. Facebook is the most prominent social network site around the globe nowadays. Users join these groups on Facebook to be with members that belong to the same city, have the same major or share the same interests and this presents the opportunity to start communicating through posting, commenting, and replying to comments, and may accommodate their communicative behaviours, converging to gain approval, attractiveness, and integration, or diverging to signify uniqueness. The purpose of this study is to examine the accommodation strategies between males and females in Mosuli social groups on Facebook, taking into consideration the various sociolinguistic variables that affect communication in CMC. A self-designed questionnaire as a data collection method has been used to gain more insights from users themselves. The study employed a quantitative method in its analysis. The data were analysed by using the communication accommodation theory, SPSS program and content analysis was employed as a tool to analyse the data since it is text-based. The results of the study reveal primarily that there are different motives to convergence and divergence Mosuli social groups. The content of the post proved to be the dominant variable in accommodation in online communication since it provokes the Facebook user whether to converge or diverge.
