The Use of the Rhetorical Devices in English

iii Abstract A rhetorical device is a method or type of language that is used as a way for a speaker or a writer to evoke a particular reaction from the listener or reader or persuading them to suppose positively. This research aims at examing rhetorical device which are 31 devices. It examined some tools that are considered as most common tools and other that are considered as less common ones. It mentioned all the rhetorical devices, outline them and give a rationalization analysis for these devices

THE YAZIDIS AS IRAQI MINORITIES, MARGINALIZATION AND THE WESTERN SECULARISM

The Yazidi community is one of the largest minority groups in Iraq, who have suffered the most. They have been subjected to marginalization and trauma for decades, which has not been documented adequately in the past. The study adopted a descriptive exploratory research to collect and investigate historical evidence regarding the marginalization and traumatic experience of the Yazidi minority in Iraq and explore whether the western secularism could be helpful in achieving restorative justice and rehabilitation. Through the study of available data in interdisciplinary sources, an attempt was made to fill the literature gap. The current study perceived whether the western so-called secularism could be effective in bringing reconciliation of the Yazidi minority with the Government of Iraq and the KRG. The study also found out that the Yazidi community does not need a European-style revolutionary and atheistic secularism which does not recognize any social, religious or political affiliation in the name of democratic principles. What the Yazidi community needs is a region specific, US-led political-religious initiative, equipped with principles of non-violence, peaceful coexistence, justice, and accessibility to equal human rights and a shared vision along with the majority of the Iraqi population and recognition by the KRG, failing which the Yezidi will continue to be considering themselves as a separate ethnic group and represent as the failure of western secularism.

The translation of circumlocution in Arabic short stories into English

This study aims at identifying and analyzing circumlocution categories and subcategories in the (SL) and their renditions into the (TL). It is based on criteria proposed for inclusion and exclusion of circumlocution .This study is concerned with the translation of literary texts, specifically short stories , from Arabic into English. It draws on four short stories selected from Arabic famous writers and their parallel translations into English. It hypothesizes that Arabic categories of circumlocution are applicable to English categories of metadiscourse, which include textual and interpersonal items. Nida's (1964) model is adopted in this study to judge the appropriateness in translation the study shows that the translators made serious decisions while opting for various techniques such as addition, subtraction and alteration. In this sense, it investigates whether the translators have successfully and appropriately managed to render the concept of Arabic circumlocution into English or not. The main problems that led to the inappropriate translations were also identified. This study concludes that there are lots of similarities between the categories of circumlocution in Arabic and the categories of metadiscourse in English. These similarities are clear when appropriate renditions are achieved.
